Head Coach – Nic Strange
Firstly, I would like to express how excited I am to be part of the Warwick Sport team in my new role as Badminton Head Coach. I am extremely positive about the current position of badminton in the University and I am hoping to build on the successes it has had working alongside all members within the club.
The experiences which I have gained from being a players reaching top 60 in the world and competing in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games have given me insight into what it takes to for players to perform at their best. These experiences which I have gained will be passed onto players to aid in their badminton journey while at the University and beyond.
After completing my career as a player I undertook the UKCC Level 3 Badminton as well as studying an MSc in Sport Coaching. Both these qualifications working alongside each other have allowed me to gain great insight into the field of coaching which I was able to put into practice working with the Welsh National Junior team as well as leading a badminton program in Cardiff Met which saw them promoted into the Premier division.
From the short time I have been at Warwick I can tell that badminton in the University is booming. The members that I have met, so far, are very enthusiastic and I am looking forward to working with you all in the near future. I would like to express that any member of the club should feel free to contact me or pop in to meet me at any time as I am always open especially when driving the badminton program forward.
In the meantime before I see everyone in person. Have a great summer!
I played for Singapore from 9 years old to 22 years old and rely on my experience as a professional player to add to my coaching abilities. I have coached school teams, beginners (adults & children) and intermediate level players, so I am able to adapt my coaching style to suit an individual’s needs. I moved to the UK 6 years ago to do a PhD and am now a postgraduate medical student at Warwick University.
I have been coaching for 5 years and have coached at a variety of different levels. I have coached the Warwick Active beginner and improver courses (aimed at university students and staff) since 2013 first as an assistant and then as a lead coach for the last 4 years. I coached a local junior club for 3 years and had the opportunity to coach all the ability levels from absolute beginners to the more advanced players. I currently do the majority of my coaching at David Lloyd Coventry doing both group sessions and one to ones, particularly for juniors between the ages of 8 and 16. I have also coached junior county for the past 3 years. I was the u12 Age group coach for the last two seasons and this year will be the u14 age group coach. As a player, I played for the University of Warwick in the women’s BUCS team while I was a student here and now captain the David Lloyd women’s team who play in the Coventry league. I have experience playing on the Badminton England circuit, although I haven’t played any tournaments in the last season and a half as I decided to concentrate more on coaching. As well as coaching and playing, I work for Warwick Sport as the Sports Engagement Assistant and as part of this role chair the Badminton Steering Group. Additionally, I am also a member of the Badminton England Development & Competition Board.
Chris Gerrett – President
Badminton, for me, has played a massive part in my life. Having first started playing at the tender age of 3, with a mother who had been playing for years and a father who, quite frankly, prefers golf. Having played such a massive part in my life I decided a long time ago that I had to give as much back to the sport as it has given to me. From starting coaching at bronze DofE I qualified as a level 1 at the age of 16 and as a Level 2 at the age of 19. I have coached a vast range of abilities from absolute beginners aged 5 and below, through to county junior standard. Alongside this I have coached at Warwick Sport’s coaching courses throughout my university career. As a player, I have played county junior level and am now a member of the University BUCS squad, coupled with this I am an active member of the badminton exec (president 2018/2019). Alongside everything else, I am one of the few active stringers’ on campus and string at all tensions and rackets. I am always available to provide guidance at club sessions or to coach 1-1 and in groups. Feel free to contact me at any time.
Hello, I am JieRu Lin, currently a second year Law student. I’ve been playing badminton for 7 years with training experiences from England, China and Malaysia and I have 3 years of coaching experience with all types of players, at various levels.
I have been coaching since the age of 16 in my local clubs before coming to university, where I have been part of the Warwickshire Junior country programme, where I have been an under 18 age group coach and most recently the lead under 14 age group coach. I have worked with numerous players in both a 1-2-1 and small group basis, with many players qualifying for nationals for their respective age groups. In addition, I proposed and set up the summer camp for juniors at the university where I have taken over the lead coach role of the camp. The camp is now in it’s 4th year.
